The Confucius Institute at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has held a send-off ceremony to bid farewell and express appreciation to its Chinese Director, Professor Su Zibo, for his immense contribution to the growth of Chinese language and culture at the University.
The former Deputy Ghanaian Director of the Institute, Dr Melvin Nartey, said the gathering was not only to bid farewell but to celebrate “a remarkable leader, scholar and friend whose dedication and vision have left a lasting mark on the Institute and the University community.”
“Since assuming office in November 2023, Prof. Su Zibo has worked tirelessly to build a strong foundation for the Institute. His leadership, commitment and humility in promoting Chinese language and culture, while shaping a science- and technology-focused Confucius Institute, have greatly enriched our institution,” he said.
Dr Nartey noted that under Professor Su’s guidance, partnerships had been strengthened, programmes expanded, and many students and staff inspired by his warmth and collaborative spirit.
Representatives from various departments of KNUST also delivered remarks in honour of Professor Su.
The Senior Assistant Registrar at the International Programmes Office, Mrs Yvonne Baiden, described Professor Su as an exceptional leader and a true partner in advancing the vision of the Institute.
“Since his arrival in November 2023, he has worked with dedication, humility and great passion to lay a strong foundation for the Institute’s growth and to promote Chinese language, culture and collaboration,” she said.
She added that his commitment to developing a science- and technology-focused Confucius Institute aligned strongly with KNUST’s mission, strengthening academic and cultural ties between Ghana and China.
“Beyond his achievements, Prof. Su’s warmth and humility have touched everyone who has worked with him,” she said.
Former Headmaster of the KNUST Junior High School, Mr Eric Oti-Attah, praised Professor Su’s leadership, noting that under his tenure the school won several awards, including the Chinese Bridge Proficiency Contest in Cape Coast.
“The Confucius Institute will grow from strength to strength in the Junior High School division. By the time you return, the Institute will have grown even further. We pray that the incoming Director will sustain the work you have begun,” he said.
The incoming Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, Professor Ningli Ke, delivered remarks outlining his vision for the Institute. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the cultural and educational exchange between Ghana and China.
“The Confucius Institute serves as a bridge, connecting the people of Ghana and China through language, culture and mutual understanding. My vision is to strengthen this connection by fostering a vibrant learning environment where students not only master the Chinese language but also immerse themselves in the rich traditions and modern innovations of Chinese culture,” he said.
He added that under his leadership, the Institute would explore new avenues for academic collaboration, cultural events and community engagement.
Members of the International Programmes Office and well-wishers presented gifts and citations to Professor Su Zibo in recognition of his service.
